Fire Safety Week: Stay Safe and Be Ready

Fire Safety Week is the best time to learn how to keep your home and family safe from fire. Fires can happen very fast. They are scary and hot. But if you have a plan, you can stay safe. This guide will tell you everything you need to know in a simple way.

What is Fire Service Week?

In India, we call Fire Safety Week the “National Fire Service Week.” We hold it every year to teach schools and workplaces about fire prevention.

This week honors the 66 brave firefighters who died during the 1944 Mumbai Dock explosion. We respect their sacrifice by staying prepared and alert.

  • Dates: April 14 to April 20, 2026.
  • 2026 Theme: “Safe School and Safe Hospital.”

Why Fire Safety is Vital

Fires are not like the movies. Smoke fills rooms very fast. It gets dark, and it becomes very hard to see or breathe. This is why preparing in advance is essential. If you have a plan, there is no need to be scared.

Three Simple Steps to Stay Safe

Keeping your home safe is easy if you follow these three steps:

1. Test Your Smoke Alarms

A smoke alarm is the “nose” of your home. It smells fire before you do.

  • Check: Press the test button. If it beeps loudly, it works.
  • Monthly: Test your alarms once every month.
  • Batteries: Put in new batteries every year.
  • Replace: Get a new alarm if yours is more than 10 years old.

2. Have an Escape Plan

You may only have two minutes to get out during a fire.

  • Two Ways Out: Every room should have two exits (like a door and a window).
  • Clear Paths: Do not block doors or windows with toys or boxes.
  • Meeting Place: Pick a spot outside, like a specific tree or mailbox, where everyone will meet.
  • Stay Out: Never go back inside for toys or pets. Tell firefighters if a pet is missing.

3. Electrical and Battery Safety

Many fires start from bad wires or overloaded plugs.

  • Correct Charger: Only use the charger that came with your phone.
  • Don’t Overload: Do not plug too many things into one socket.
  • Safe Charging: Never charge a phone under your pillow or on your bed. Use a flat, hard desk.
  • Keep Cool: Keep batteries away from direct heat or hot sunlight.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher (The PASS Method)

A fire extinguisher is a red can used for small fires. To use it, remember PASS:

  1. P (Pull): Pull the pin out.
  2. A (Aim): Aim the nozzle at the bottom of the fire.
  3. S (Squeeze): Squeeze the handle.
  4. S (Sweep): Sweep the nozzle from side to side until the fire is out.

Kitchen, School, and Work Safety

In the Kitchen

  • Stay Present: Do not leave the kitchen while cooking.
  • Turn it Off: Turn off the stove before you leave the room.
  • Gas Safety: If you smell gas, do not turn on lights or fans. Open windows and call for help.

At School and Work

  • Listen: If the alarm sounds, stay calm. Walk; do not run.
  • Follow Leaders: Listen to your teacher or boss. They know the way out.
  • No Lifts: Never use an elevator (lift) during a fire. Use the stairs.

What to Do During a Fire

If you see smoke, do not hide. Hiding makes it hard for firefighters to find you.

  • Get Down: Crawl on your hands and knees. The clean air is near the floor.
  • Feel the Door: Touch doors with the back of your hand. If it is hot, do not open it.
  • Call for Help: Dial 101 for the Fire Brigade or 112 for all emergencies.

Stop, Drop, and Roll

If your clothes catch fire:

  1. Stop: Do not run.
  2. Drop: Lie on the ground and cover your face.
  3. Roll: Roll over and over until the fire is out.

Frequently Ask Question

You should get a new smoke alarm every 10 years. Even if it still makes a sound when you test it, the inside parts can get old and dusty

Cooking is the top cause. Many fires start because someone forgot they were cooking food on the stove.

No. Do not put lithium-ion batteries in your trash or recycling bin at home. They can get crushed and start a fire in the garbage truck. Take them to a special battery recycling store.

That "chirp" means the battery is low. You must put in a new battery right away so the alarm can keep you safe.

Try to practice your home fire drill two times a year. Practice once during the day and once at night when it is dark.
